Port Harcourt Hosts First Edition of Polo Pageant in 2013

The Polo Sport Modelling Agency (PSMA) on Today said the agency would use beauty pageant as a strategy to empower girls so as to dissuade them from prostitution.
Mr Odafe Atogun, Managing Partner of the club, on a press conference in Abuja, said information available to the agency suggested that must young girls were lured into prostitution without knowing it. He also identified poverty as a driving force that promotes the trade.

See After the Cut.

``It is not difficult to trace the cause of the drift that ultimately claims their future, it is simply poverty. While many Nigerian girls are pitiably poor, only a few have the strength of character to rise above poverty to become successful in life. For the countless numbers that are trapped by the destructive drift into prostitution, we have a simple message, every girl can rise above poverty with dignity, which forms the theme of the pageants,’’ he said.
Atogun said the club intended to reach the less privileged and would ensure that they were not exploited. He said the agency aimed to make Miss Polo Pageant a regular part of polo tournaments across the country, such that every tournament would produce a ``Miss Polo.''
He said the pageant was expected to leverage on the glamour and power associated with the game of polo to champion the cause of the Nigeria girl through sports modelling. Atogun said that the first edition of the polo pageant would take place at the forthcoming Port Harcourt Polo Tournament on Jan. 18, 2013.
