NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON INFORMATION OPENS IN ABUJA

The Minister of Information, Mr. Labara Maku declared open the 2012 National Conference on Information (NCI) in Abuja with the theme ‘‘openness in Governance, the FOI Act, 2011 in perspective. While declaring the Conference Mr. Maku said ‘‘this is the first time in the history of the country an elected government has passed into law an act enabling citizens get access to information. ‘‘This indeed in opinion is very good for us as media practitioners and citizens to ensure transparency and accountability in public service.

‘‘The freedom of Information Act which President Goodluck Jonathan signed into law in May 2011 has for the first time in our history given us the media people and citizens a legal backing in our search for information in the way our society is.’’ The workshop was organized by the Federal Ministry of Information in Conjunction with the office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Nigerian Union of Journalist.
Those present at the workshop include the Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Information, Mrs. Kehinde Ajoni, President NUJ Mallam Mohamed Garba, Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, Pioneer President NAWOJ, Mrs. Brenda Akpan, Permanent Secretaries, Head of Media Organization and Directors from State Ministries of Information. The objective of the workshop is to enhance the capacity of participants to deal with issues arising from the FOI Act.
