There was a protest at the weekend by over 10,000 flood victims in Rivers State, following announcement by the state government to close down three rehabilitation camps in the state.
The victims said the protest became necessary as they had nowhere to go since their mud houses had already been washed away by the flood.
The Three camps closed were all in Abua/Odua Local Government Area of the state, while 24 others in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni,Ahoada West and Ahoada East Local Government Areas would also be closed soon, it was gathered.
Many of the victims pleaded with the federal and state governments, as well as well meaning individuals and corporate organisations to assist them. Chairman of the flood relief committee, who is also the state's deputy governor, Tele Ikuru, said it would not be possible for the state government to rebuild the destroyed houses. He said building houses for the victims would mean devoting the entire state's annual budget to the project.
THE QUESTION NOW IS::: WHAT ARE THE LONG TERM PLANS OF THE STATE FOR THE FLOOD VICTIMS??
