The battle of wits in the Rivers PDP has finally dealt a blow on the supervising Minister for Education, Nyeso Wike as he and his men wept uncontrollably on Tuesday night when the Minister broke the news that he has been asked to drop his governorship ambition by the powers that be.

As the national primaries of Nigeria’s main opposition party, All Progressives Congress (APC) approach, there are strong and reliable indications from within the party that Rivers state governor, Rotimi Amaechi is likely to emerge as the party’s presidential candidate with his running mate being Kano state governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso. Although, Lagos state governor, Raji Fashola is also being considered for the vice position. Powerful sources within the party confirmed this likely combination but party spokespersons refused comments when approached by newsmen.

Professor Don Baridam is former Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, one-time chairman of the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Federal Universities, and ex-chairman of Association of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities. Now an influential member of Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State, Baridam tells Francis Ugwoke the kind of governor the state would want in 2015. Excerpts:

How would you evaluate the strength of Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State after the defection of the governor, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, to All Progressives Congress?

Based on the history of Rivers State since the inception of PDP, the state has always been a

PDP state. Governor Amaechi as a free citizen has the right to go to any party of his choice, but his leaving PDP will not affect the fortunes of the party. I do not think that Governor Amaechi is leaving the party because he hates the party that brought him to limelight, and made him what he is. He is leaving the party because of the apparent misunderstanding between him and some people in the party. With a little patience and political sagacity, the differences would probably have been sorted out in the interest of all interest groups in our great party. But one beautiful thing about democracy is that it is the only known political system that confers choice on every citizen. Perhaps, I should add that the programmes which Governor Amaechi is executing in the state are PDP programmes, which goes to confirm our staying power and reach as the largest political party in Africa.

Ayo Fayose: Governor K. Fayemi concession to defeat Just a Publicity Stunt

The Ekiti State Governor-elect, Mr Ayo Fayose, on Thursday in Abuja, said the concession of incumbent Governor Kayode Fayemi to defeat was a stunt aimed at eliciting public sympathy.

Fayose told the News Agency of Nigeria that although Fayemi at the weekend conceded publicly and congratulated him, the governor had not picked calls from him since then. He said, “The governor said I am conceding to defeat. Let me be realistic with you, there is a difference between propaganda and reality. “I have been calling the governor since after our meeting but he hasn’t picked the call. “If you read all papers now, he said I will create local governments before I go; how do you reconcile these things? “I am not a propagandist, I am a realist. 

The governor says he will do employment before he leaves that means you want to create problem for the incoming government. “So I see that concession, as good as it may be, we must all be realistic about it, we must not deceive the Nigerian populace. Read More after Cut.

All indications show that the Governorship election in Ekiti state was free and fair, except a late report from Sahara reporters that some INEC accredited reporters from different media houses were denied access to the Final Collation. Whereas we also wait For the Verdict from International Observers, it is clear to Nigerians that the Government of the Day is Committed to Play fair despite the fact that they are the Opposition in Ekiti State.

 Two days before the elections APC Governors were angry that they were denied access to Ekiti State for a party rally in support of Gov Fayemi, (Gov Oshiomole and Gov Ameachi of Edo and Rivers State respectfully) with the Governor of Rivers State claiming to have been threatened with a Gun by the Nigerian Army. Now the Question is: what Impact would the presence of Gov Ameachi or Gov Oshoimole have on the outcome of the Ekiti Elections? What would they bring to the table that the presence of Tinubu or Fashola hasn’t, I would say nothing significant enough to convince any ekiti citizen. Or did they have plans to support the campaign with One vote - One Envelope? Well that’s me sharing my thoughts.

The other very important Question is; Can Failure in the Ekiti Polls Mean Eminent Failure for APC? They have just lost one of their major strong holds where they had the power of Incumbency to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Can they recover?

They are the loudest and always quick to blame and never offer solution. This is obvious in the press statements they release anytime Nigeria is in Crisis “Nigeria” not PDP. What really makes them progressives?

Progressive: Defined as promoting or favoring progress towards conditions or new policies or methods, it is also defined as Gradually advancing in extent; Increasing.

After Today’s Result and the attitude and strategy of the APC (All Progressives Congress) Would you really call them Progressives? I will leave you to answer that.

In closing I would like to ask you, yes!! You that’s always complaining about the government and that always knows what should and should not be. Do you have a party card (APC or PDP)? Do you vote? Don’t Sit and Talk, get involved with the affairs of Nigeria today and maybe you can be that change and Progress Nigeria Really Needs.

To the people of Ekiti.

Forget Fayemi, forget Fayose and the others! Forget APC, forget PDP and all the rest! Be selfish for once, think for yourself. The politicians have failed, the elite have come up short. See them fighting like little children, see them throw dirt at and badmouth each other. Makes you wonder, are these ones worthy to lead. Ekiti is overwhelmed by army fatigue and the heavy machinery of war. Who is the enemy and where is the battle. When did ballot become battle and election war?

Everytime I see soldiers during elections, I just know we are still far away from our land of promise. I hate to say that our leaders have lost it! And yes, we are at war! But the weapons of our warfare is not carnal, says the good book. And losers go to ballot with guns and mortar but winners come with open hearts.

This is a war for your well being and that of your children. Can guns put food on your table, or educate your children, or build hospitals, or tar the roads, provide energy? Guns are the tools of the weak. The pen is mightier the sword! Power resides in the mind. Power is in your hands, that piece of paper.

Remember what I said in the beginning, forget them all. What is your dream for Ekiti? What does Ekiti of the future look like in your mind? Choose that.

I leave you this message: "The will of the people has been subverted by corrupt governments for far too long. Now is the time to take back your will, your power. When you step into that pooling center today, it doesn't matter if it is a school or a community center or an old factory, you need to think of it as a church. A cathedral of liberty, people coming together to worship at the holy alter of democracy." And may the good Lord hear your prayers.

After an unwarranted attack on his person and infringement on his freedom of movement, Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has been allowed to leave Olorunsogo – Ilado, Ondo State.

Governor Amaechi was allowed to leave by road after the aircraft that carried him to Akure was impounded on superior orders. 

The governor is in high spirits and remains committed to the ideals of democratic rule and the right of all parties to a free and fair contest.

AGAIN GOVERNOR AMAECHI AMBUSHED BY FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SECURITY AGENTS


The Rivers State Government is concerned about the safety of Governor Amaechi who is right now being held hostage commando style by soldiers and federal government security agents in Olorunsgoilado, Ondo state. 

Governor Amaechi as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ forum and as an APC governor and chieftain had left Port Harcourt this morning for Ekiti state where he was to join his brother governor in his last mega rally before the elections.

Governor Amaechi was ambushed and refused entry into Ekiti by military personnel acting on orders from above. He made to turn back and return to Akure where his chattered aircraft was parked but was chased and rounded by armed soldiers and security personnel in Olorunsgoilado, Ondo state. According to the captain who led the operation, he had orders not to allow the governor entry or exit.

In the meantime, the chattered aircraft that conveyed he governor has been grounded while the minsters of Defence, police Affairs and Minister of state for Defence have landed the Akure airport.  Read More after Cut.

The once PDP safe haven Rivers State, is now divided. The governor who proudly flags the APC colours took over 80% of his cabinet and beneficiaries with him to join the progress ives. If you ask any member of his cabinet or a contractor in his administration they say "I cannot bite the hand that feed me". But is this saying also applicable to all rivers People? Talking to some business men and women, they sill say they are proudly PDP.
