Rivers State Accused of Blackmail by President and Dickson over Oil Well

Dickson and Ameachi At a Courtesy Call in Bayelsa

The ‘oil battle’ between Bayelsa State and neighbouring Rivers State took a twist on Tuesday with Governor Seriake Dickson accusing Rotimi Amaechi’s government of disparaging President Goodluck Jonathan.

Dickson also accused the Rivers State Government of making statements capable of creating a crisis between the two states.

He requested the government of Rivers State to tender an unreserved apology to the President and the government of Bayelsa State “over its unguarded, mischievous and misleading statements, which clearly are calculated to disparage the Presidency and incite violence between the two states.”

The State Chairman of the Board of Internal Revenue, Mrs Onene Osila Obele-Oshoko made this known in Port Harcourt Tuesday while answering reporters’ questions on her Board’s readiness to flag-off the new tax administration system.

“The new system is not about increase in the amount to be paid as tax but about the system of collection and general administration”, she noted.

The $45 Million Jet, Bought for Safety Say's Ibim Semenitari (RSG INFO)

you will recall that, We had posted a story about Gov. Rotimi Ameachi's New Jet. After much criticism by the public and even opposition parties, the Government released a statement Confirming the Purchase of the new  Bombardier Jet for Governor Chibuike Amaechi at a cost of $45million through the Commissioner for information Ibim Semenitari.

Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, the Commissioner for Information in reaction to inquiries and rumors said “It was paid for two years ago. The reason is for safety. The new aircraft is a much safer one.” She said the old aircraft will be sold.

According to a report, Amaechi acquired the brand new Bombardier Global 5000 (N565RS) for his exclusive use.
The report criticised Amaechi for going for such luxury” at time hundreds of thousands of residents in his state are displaced by the worst flooding crisis in the state’s history”.

However, Semenitari pointed out that the purchase was made two years ago based on expert advice that the new one is safer.
She argued that the Governor duly consulted the Rivers state House of Assembly and the purchase was approved.
She said that the state government has not neglected the flood victims.

Port Harcourt Residents Lament as they Experience Traffic like Never Before

Forces Avenue Traffic

Port Harcourt today experienced one of the worst traffic Jam ever. The main town was so jammed that all the traffic agencies in the state were helpless.
Sources say the traffic was caused by the moving of heavy equipment for the monorail project, along Azikiwe road. But I want to ask some questions, what happened to moving those equipment at night? or if it must be done during the day, what happened to informing citizens so they prepare for it???. I walked for over 30-45mins today under the sun and it was not funny at all, the traffic started at about 7-9am and reduced at about 5pm.
I think Citizens of Port Harcourt City Deserve better. What do you think.??

Port Harcourt Jailbreak: 4 Inmates Still On The Run

Jailbreak

The Federal Government yesterday said a manhunt had been launched for the four prison inmates who escaped from the Ahoda Prison, Port Harcourt on Saturday, following  a violent jailbreak.
The minister of interior, Comrade Patrick Moro who stated this in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. George Udoh, advised community members not to confront the escapees themselves but report them to security operatives who are already on their trail, as they were considered dangerous, adding also that the circumstances leading to the escape were being investigated.
The statement also revealed that six prisoners who were critically injured while being prevented by the security officers from escaping from the prison were taken to the hospital and they are now backed in the prison. He added that only four prisoners escaped during the attack.
LEADERSHIP also learnt that the prisoners who went on rampage broke the office of the Chief Wader and carted away vital documents and also burnt some. They also vandalised the prison’s clinic and also pull down wall of the prison.
It was gathered that the prison inmates went on rampage at about 5pm on Saturday and vandalised the Office of the Chief Warden.
The irate inmates also set ablaze vital documents in the prison and broke down the Close-Circuit Camera used in monitoring them.
LEADERSHIP learnt that the six inmates were injured when they attempted to pull down the wall of the prison in order to escape.
Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro, who confirmed the development said the situation had been brought under control.
He assured that investigation would immediately be carried to unravel the cause of the violence, stressing that security agencies were already on the trail of the fleeing inmates.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro has commiserated with the victims of the Kaduna bomb blast.
While condemning the activities of the violent group, he reiterated call on Nigerians to join hands with the government in tackling the menace of wanton killings in the country.

A Journey to Remember (Yenagoa to Port Harcourt)

Women Using ladder to get into Truck

How Would you like to travel from Yenagoa To Port Harcourt??: I saw this story on the Punch News paper and felt i should share.

As a youth corps member, Mr. Junior Jackson is engaged in his primary assignment at Oloibiri in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. He was among the victims of the floods that ravaged many Bayelsa communities and displaced thousands of people.
Jackson, who was only able to salvage his NYSC uniforms, decided to flee the state as the water level kept increasing. He planned to travel to Lagos to reunite with his family, but he had to get to Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, before he could board a bus to his destination.
He went to the bus terminus in Yenagoa called Park, hoping to board a bus to Port Harcourt. However, there was no bus. Instead, he saw people rushing into a truck, the type that is normally used to transport sand to construction sites.
Curiously, Jackson asked one of the touts who were busy loading a set of trucks to direct him to a Port Harcourt park. The tout pointed at the truck and said, “These trucks are going to Port Harcourt. If you are interested, pay your money and climb in.”
Jackson couldn’t understand why a truck meant to transport sand had been turned into a passenger bus of sorts. The tout volunteered more explanations. “Look here, if you know you want to go to Port Harcourt, climb into this truck now or make way for those who are ready. Haven’t you heard that water has taken over the road to Port Harcourt? There is no car or bus that can travel to ‘Port’ from Bayelsa. That is why we are using these trucks,” he said.
After dillydallying, Jackson had no choice than to board the truck. Besides, he saw girls, elderly men, women and children scrambling to get into the truck.
In fact, truck has become the only available means of travelling from Bayelsa State to other parts of the country. This is because the East-West Road, which is the only route out of the state, has been submerged. Apart from being overrun by water, significant parts of it have been washed away. The floods have chopped off one of the lanes at three different parts, restricting vehicles to one lane.
From Mbiama, a border town between Bayelsa State and Okogbe, Rivers State, flood had taken over. The water has also sunk the Patani axis of the road that links travelers from the state to the neighbouring Delta State.
Indeed, there is no difference between a typical river and the road. The ferocious flood dealt so much blow to the state that it cut it off from other parts of the country. Therefore, the only way to navigate the water and get to dry land is by boarding a truck.
Jackson’s experience sums up the transport challenges facing residents of Bayelsa whose homes have been taken over by floods. The Igbo traders leave in droves. Their houses are submerged and their businesses are closed. Out of fear of the unknown, they leave for their villages by trucks.
Climbing a truck is not an easy task. But the touts had provided a ladder to make it easier for the travelers. Teenagers and other able-bodied men and women climb through the ladder to the truck without assistance.
However, weak passengers and vulnerable people such as the elderly, the sick and children are assisted by the touts to climb the trucks. The touts are, indeed, having a field day. Some make jokes with the development, especially when they see pretty girls coming to patronise the unconventional means of transportation. Sometimes, they push the bums of the girls climbing the ladder as they pretend to assist.
The touts and truck drivers are also capitalising on the opportunity to make money. One of them, Chinedu Eze, says every day over 10 passenger-bearing trucks depart Yenagoa to Port Harcourt.
“We have been busy here helping people to go to Port Harcourt. Initially when we started, each passenger was meant to pay N2,000 before boarding; but now, we have reduced it to N1,000,” he says.
But the truck does not get to Port Harcourt. It stops at Elele in Emogha Local Government Area of Rivers State, where the passengers disembark and board another bus that will take them to Port Harcourt after paying additional N500. Then the trucks make U-Turn, and load other stranded passengers returning from Port Harcourt to Yenagoa.
There is always a problem of overloading. One of the truck drivers who identified himself simply as Emeka, says the business is good.
“Right now, there is no sand to carry. Water has submerged the sand. But this business of using my truck to carry passengers is good. In each trip, I carry 45 passengers at N1,000 each, and I can go three or four trips each day. So, it is good business,” he remarks.
Emeka is right. The passengers bear the brunt. They are loaded like packs of frozen fish. Some of them squat, others stand, holding the body of the tuck.
One of the passengers, Kola Odumodu, describes it as a very dangerous means of transport. “I climbed the truck when I got to Elele. I had no choice because the bus I boarded did not go further because of the water. I was scared,” he said.
The state Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission, Mr. Jack Vincent, has expressed concern about what he described as “a risky means of transport;” and appealed to transporters to desist from using trucks as passenger vehicles, as some have been involved in accidents since the practice started.
He says, “People should desist from the practice. Instead of packing people like animals in the truck, I urge those people at the park to go and get high-rise buses.”
He highlights the dangers posed by such method of transport: “The road is riddled with a number of potholes and when the trucks get there, they are likely to fall because water has covered the gullies.
“You can imagine the magnitude of injury that will result from that, especially as the passengers are not protected in any way. Apart from sustaining injuries, passengers can also die.
“One of the trucks fell in Ahoada and caused gridlock on the road for hours. We were able to evacuate the victims and tow the truck away. Almost one lane of the road is chopped off and the thing will keep chopping off because of the water,” he says.
Do you think its the Governments responsibility to provide means of transportation in times like this.???

News About Yesterday's Kaduna State Church Bombing.

 St. Rita's church Kaduna

A bomb explosion at a Catholic Church in Malali, Kaduna State claimed 15 lives and injured 100 people yesterday.
But the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) put the casualty figure at eight.
The spokesperson of the agency Yushau Shuaib, said: “NEMA rescuers in collaboration with stakeholders have so far confirmed eight dead and over 100 people injured from the bomb explosion.”
President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday condemned the suicide bomb attack, calling it “barbaric, cruel and uncalled for.”
The President who was “extremely saddened by the explosion,” noted that “the apparent objective of the criminal and unpatriotic elements and forces behind the attack is to set back the progress the Administration has made in the fight against terrorism in the country. It is obvious that these people do not mean well for Nigeria and its unity and development.”
Jonathan, however, expressed confidence that the war against terrorism would become more unrelenting as the nation would never give in to the forces of terror and retardation.
He added that the persistence of messengers of evil would not prevail over the will of the government and the people to secure peace and safety.
According to him, “our efforts to deal with all acts of terror and violence would only be redoubled even as the security agencies continue to receive all the support they need from government to reverse this unfortunate and unacceptable trend that threatens the peace and stability of our nation.”
The President commiserated with the Catholic Church, families and friends of the victims of the bombing, assuring them that government’s resolve to deal with the threat of terrorism remained strong.
Also, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, condemned the attack.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Imam Imam, Tambuwal added that the attack on innocent worshippers and other bystanders was both callous and senseless.
He, however, urged Nigerians to do more to destroy the ability of the terrorists to unleash mayhem on innocent, peaceful and law-abiding citizens.
The Parish Priest of St. Rita’s Catholic Church, Rev. Fr. Bonny Bazah whose state of health was uncertain was said to have been hit by the blast as he was about administering Holy Communion on the worshipers in the church.
Rev. Fr. Bazah was initially rushed to Garkuwa Hospital before he was later moved to another hospital for medical attention.
An eyewitness, Ishaku James, who drove Bazah’s vehicle to St. Gerald’s Catholic Hospital in search of the priest, said that “the suicide bomber came with a Honda CRV, broke the fence and entered into the church,” adding that “all the casualties were taken to Garkuwa hospital, Barau Dikko, 44 Military Reference Hospital and St. Gerald Catholic Hospital.
“They even told us that they brought our reverend father here at St. Gerald, that is why we are here. That is even his vehicle. Honestly, the people that are affected are many. Garkuwa and Barau Dikko hospitals are complaining that the number of people brought to the hospitals was too many for them to cope with. We don’t know actually where the reverend father is now; we have been looking for him in all the hospitals. We saw him, he was injured on his face.”
James said that “there are many people who died inside the church. Even the person who drove the CRV, the suicide bomber died”, adding that “he didn’t follow the gate, he broke the fence and forced the jeep into the church.
“The Rev. Fr. was blessing the Holy Communion when the bomb blast happened. I was inside the church. Many people died inside the church. The SUV entered behind the wall where the choir was singing and the children were in session.”
One of the victims who was receiving treatment along with her three children at St. Gerald’s, Mrs. Veronica Johnson, said that the blast took worshippers unawares, adding that it happened “when everybody was kneeling down. We were praying, then we heard something hit the wall and when we turned, I saw a car like jeep (SUV), broke the wall of the church and entered the premises.
“We saw some parts of the body of the driver of the SUV hanging on the wall where the explosion occurred. Many people were injured, some people died and while others lay on the ground. I have three children here; you can see them with me here in the hospital.”
Another victim, Miss Jessita Ogwu also narrated: “We were inside the church when we heard an explosion and before I knew what was happening I saw myself on the floor. I can say many people died because it mostly affected the choir people.”
According to her, “the Rev. Fr. preached on God’s possibilities. He was saying that if we have faith everything is possible. He gave the stories of Solomon and Bartimaeus, and that in everything we do, we should exercise faith. He was about giving Holy Communion when we heard the bang from the blast.”
The Youths Against Disaster Initiative (YADI) cautioned youths against reprisal attacks. The National Coordinator of YADI, Abubakar Jimoh, made the appeal yesterday after the bomb explosion at the Catholic Church in Malali.
He urged Nigerians to be wary of undesirable elements that could capitalise on the insecurity in the country to attack innocent citizens.
While condemning the suicide attackers and similar ethnic and religious violence in some parts of the country, YADI called on security agencies to ensure they provide adequate measures to protect lives and property of the citizens, especially at a period when many Nigerians would be travelling back to their places of work after the Sallah public holiday.
While noting that Nigerians from various religious and ethnic backgrounds have lived peacefully with one another for a long time, he urged that the citizens should continue to be their brothers’ keepers in the face of national challenges.
YADI also commended response agencies especially the NEMA, the military, the police, Red Cross and volunteers for their timely response to the scene of such disasters in the country.
Notwithstanding the YADI’s appeal, a crisis was only averted following an attempted reprisal attack by youths in Kaduna after the explosion.
Soldiers, armed policemen and other security operatives were quickly deployed in the area of the explosion, where the youths in the heavily dominated Muslim community in Kaduna metropolis had engaged in a reprisal attack over the bomb explosion.
Two commercial motorcyclists (okada) riders and a woman were victims of the reprisal attack in Malali as they were found dead on the road. The situation made the government to mobilise more armed security forces in the troubled area to ensure the maintenance of law and order.
Also, there was the deployment of police anti-riot vehicles and military combat vehicles on the roads in the southern part of the metropolis, especially in Sabo to nip in the bud any reprisal attacks from the youths in the area.
The Archbishop of Catholic Diocese in Kaduna, Bishop Matthew Man’oso Ndagoso who visited the various hospitals where the victims were admitted, urged youths in Kaduna not to engage themselves in any reprisal attack, saying that they should rather engage in more prayers to God for an end to the security challenges.
But he expressed surprise on why such bomb attack on St. Rita’s Church should come when the Muslims were still in the Sallah celebration.
The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Reuben Buhari who spoke on the state radio, advised the youths not to take laws into their hands following the bomb explosion, as government and security agencies were on top of the situation.
He told The Guardian: “We condemn the bomb explosion in the church in its totality, and if you heard what I have been saying, calling people on the radio, I have been on it since morning… just to ask people to stay calm and not to take the laws into their hands.
“And we are telling people that security forces are actually out there to safeguard the situation and they are trying to ensure the maintenance of peace and order…we totally condemn the incident, it is barbaric and inhuman.”
The state Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Adenaike who visited St. Rita’s Catholic Church to assess the situation appealed for calm, while assuring that his men were on top of the situation.
In a statement, the Leader of the Civil Society Coalition in the North, Shehu Sani said that “the reported attack on the Catholic church in Unguwan Yero ward in Malali area of Kaduna stands condemned,” stressing, “it’s a dastardly, evil, ungodly, barbaric and unprovoked attack.
“It’s an attack on our freedom, peace and humanity. The attack is a savage and despicable onslaught against civil liberties and our constitutional rights to life and religion. We condemn it without reservation.”
According to him, “the northern parts of Nigeria have suffered from so much bloodshed and violence,” adding that “we live in an era of interval of bloodletting.
“We must not submit to violence or succumb to fear. Intolerance is eroding our civil liberties and insurgency is destroying our constitutional rights. No progress and development will come to a part of the country where there is no peace. The voices of freedom must speak out. Silence sustains violence. Our churches and mosques have now become a hostile arena for deranged and murderous psychopaths,” he said.
Sani said that “the government of Nigeria must wake up and live up to its duties and constitutional responsibilities. We must find a lasting solution to this carnage and arbitrariness.
“We call on all the people of Kaduna to remain peaceful. We condemn and reject any attempt at reprisal. Reprisal against innocents persons is as vicious and condemnable as the unprovoked attack.”

Governor Amaechi Buys $50 Million Bombardier Jet

New Jet Acquired By Gov. Ameachi

The Governor of Rivers state,"our Governor" Rotimi Ameachi has acquired a brand new Bombardier Global 5000 (N565RS) for his exclusive use, SaharaReporters has learnt.
Mr. Amaechi’s lavish new “toy” comes at a time hundreds of thousands of residents in his state are displaced by the worst flooding crisis in the state’s history.
The newly purchased jet left Montreal-Trudeau Airport in Montreal, Quebec to Dakar Yoff International Airport. And then it was delivered to the state government on October 7th 2012.
The jet was primarily purchased from Bombardier in Canada for $45.7 million through the Bank of Utah Trustee account. “This is an ungodly act,” said a Port Harcourt-based human rights campaigner. “Why should Governor Amaechi’s priority be to acquire a jet at a time the state is experiencing the worst flooding in its history, leaving many Rivers indigenes homeless?” he added.
Last year Mr. Amaechi traded off the state’s current Embraer Legacy 600 claiming it was too expensive to maintain. There were also unconfirmed claims that the jet was struck by lightning.
The oil-rich Rivers State already owns an AW139 helicopter which it leased to Aero Contractors. The state then turned around to patronize Aero’s VIP Sikorsky S76C helicopter at a cost one critic described as “exorbitant and unjustified.”
Last year, the state government sold its Dash 8-Q200 aircraft to Cross River State for $6 million. Cross River State then leased the plane to Aero Contractors to undertake commercial flights to and from Obudu airstrip in the state.
Rivers State owned Embraer Legacy 3000 jet solfd to Cross River's state at a giveaway price.

Another sad news, from Port Harcourt. THIRTEEN-year-old Jennifer Innocent is battling to save her life at University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, UPTH, after being allegedly hit in the head by stray bullet from an army rifle.
The incident happened Wednesday at the Mile 4 neighbourhood of Obio/Akpor locality in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, following a scuffle between an unidentified soldier and a commercial bus driver.
Confirming the incident, Precious Innocent, younger sister to the stray bullet victim who was with her at the time, said:   “I bent down during the fight between the soldier and the bus man. I told my sister to bend down, she refused. Suddenly the army gun went off and she was hit on her head.”

Dead Man Surprise Mourners at his wake in Brazil

I was just going through some foreign news and i saw this.. story about a Brazilian car washer who was suspected dead.

There was screaming. There was fainting. It doesn't happen every day: a car washer in Brazil walked into his own wake, where his distraught family was already weeping over their loss.
"People were so startled. Women were fainting, people started running all over the place," said Maria Menezes, one of the mourners at the event in Alagoinhas, in Salvador de Bahia state, G1 news reported.
Gilberto Araujo, 41, heard from a friend on the street that his family thought he was dead and was busy getting ready to bury him so he decided to head straight to the wake and clear things up.
"A friend of mine told me there was a coffin at the wake - and that I was inside it," Araujo said. "I told him: 'But I am alive! Pinch me!"
In fact, Araujo's family had been burying a corpse that looked startlingly like their loved one, a body that had yet to be formally identified, G1 reported.
"I am just beside myself with joy," a beaming Marina Santana told the network. "What mother who is told her son is dead is not going to be overjoyed when she sees her son alive again?"

Victims Of flooding Lament over poor treatment.

THE ravaging floods that swept away their houses, farms and other valuables may have receded, but the pains of the victims are far from being over.Across the camps where they are housed nationwide as displaced people, there seem to be a thread that runs through them all - abandonment!
And the victims themselves, through appeals and protests, are telling the story of their agonies, which are embodied in lack of medics and fake drugs, food, security as well as sharp practices allegedly perpetrated by some officials saddled with the duty of taking care of them.
However, despite the deluge of complaints, more public-spirited organisations and individuals have continued to donate relief materials to the victims.
In Abarikpo camp in Ahoada East Council of Rivers State at the weekend, the flood victims held the State Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association, (NMA) Dr. Ibitrokoemi Korubo and 20 others who were on voluntary service to the camp hostage.
The Guardian gathered that the victims’ action followed alleged neglect of the camp by government officials and other relevant authorities.
Some of the victims said that their camp was crowded and had not been receiving any attention from the government, and lacked relief materials.
One of the victims, Michael Udo, said “despite the fact that the camp is overcrowded, we have been ignored, nobody has shown concern towards our plight and you will agree with me that the situation is annoying, no food to eat, over 30 persons are sharing one room.”
Similarly, the paramount ruler of the Abarikpo community, Eze Samuel Oboyi, explained that the victims were pained by the inability of government to recognise them, stressing that the negligence prompted the their action.
However, when contacted, the state Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr. Emeka Wogu, said the neglect of some camps was due to proliferation of such camps by individuals.
Whether Proliferated or not, I think people who are in those camps should get proper treatment and never be abandoned. This could Happen to anyone...
