Pay Your Taxes |
A new, efficient and credible tax administration system that would guarantee growth in investment and respect for corporate citizens, tax payers and the Nigerian public is to kick off in Rivers State in the first quarter of 2013.
The State Chairman of the Board of Internal Revenue, Mrs Onene Osila Obele-Oshoko made this known in Port Harcourt Tuesday while answering reporters’ questions on her Board’s readiness to flag-off the new tax administration system.
“The new system is not about increase in the amount to be paid as tax but about the system of collection and general administration”, she noted.
She said that already a new revenue bill and another one on the harmonization of taxes in the state is receiving attention at the Rivers State House of Assembly and expressed optimism that steps were being taken to ensure that taxes are collected in an orderly and civilized way.
The Chairman, who lauded the Rivers State House of Assembly for giving the bill on the harmonization of taxes an accelerated hearing, assured that when operational, the new tax administration system would promote a one-stop-shop approach to issues of taxation in the state.
“It is expected that when fully operational, touts and tax forces will be a thing of the past in the state”, as all stakeholders in the state and local government councils have harmonized their areas of operation.
“The aim is to ensure that all persons doing business in the state or who have intentions to do business are not unduly harassed”, she emphasized while applauding the state chapter of ALGON, the Environmental Sanitation Authority and other stakeholders for their understanding throughout the process.
The State Board of Internal Revenue, she said, is also taking steps to brace up for the new challenge explaining that ‘training and re-training of staff in the board is already being done”.
“We are looking at a situation where taxes are not paid into the wrong hands but at designated centres; because we think that the Rivers State economy should be internally driven and our Internally Generate Revenue should reflect that as well”.
She urged Rivers people to support the new Board of Internal Revenue in delivering on its mandate, saying “when you pay your taxes regularly you have a right and duty to ask government what it is doing with your money”.
